JAMA Dermatology ’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

In an era in which social and racial justice have garnered substantial national attention, it is high time to place the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on medical publishing in dermatology. JAMA Dermatology aims to be a leader in the field in improving DEI in the dermatology literature, especially in the process of publishing articles. Following the recent resignation of the leadership of the JAMA Network, the journal team—together with the network—reflected on how systemic racism pervades our organization and its work. This event sparked deep self-reflection within our journal’s team, who renewed its commitment to improve DEI in the articles we publish and to consider how we can implement principles of DEI into the journal process, as included in the updated mission statement. We outline in this article the results of some of those reflections and a framework for how we may conceptualize our role in advocating for DEI in medical publishing.
