Physician Adenoma Detection Rates and Colorectal Cancer

To the Editor In a recent study about colon cancer rates after colonoscopy screening, the authors presented data from 3 Kaiser Permanente medical centers and reported detection rates by site. The article’s Table showed that rates of patients who received a colonoscopy after a positive fecal immunochemical test result increased for Kaiser Permanente Northern California while the inverse was found for Kaiser Permanente Southern California. Moreover, the rates for Kaiser Permanente Washington were dramatically lower and did not change over time. Can the authors comment on these findings? Do they reflect a difference in patient population, physician practice, or some other factor? Also, it would be helpful to report a sensitivity analysis with these health care systems analyzed individually.
