Patterns and determinants of incident cataract surgery in China from 2011 to 2015 using a nationally representative longitudinal database
Objectives
To investigate incident cataract surgery and to investigate determinants of cataract surgery uptake in Chinese adults.
Design
This nationally representative longitudinal study recorded self-reported incident cataract surgery, and measured biological, clinical and socioeconomical characteristics at baseline and endline.
Setting
In the first stage, 150 county-level units were randomly chosen with a probability-proportional-to-size sampling technique from a sampling frame containing all county-level units. The sample was stratified by region and within region by urban district or rural county and per capita gross domestic product. The final sample of 150 counties fell within 28 provinces of China.
Participants
Urban and rural Chinese persons aged 45 years and older.
Primary and secondary outcome measures
Incident cataract surgery (primary outcome) and the factors associated with incident cataract surgery (secondary outcome).
Results
Among 16 663 people enrolled in 2011, 13 705 (82.2%) attended follow-up in 2015. Among these, 167 (1.22%) reported incident cataract surgery. Those receiving surgery were significantly older (66.2±8.79 vs 58.3±9.18, p≤0.001) and more likely to report: illiteracy (44.9% vs 27.1%, p

Cost of surgical treatment for ulnar nerve entrapment in Finland, 2011-2015: a registry-based cost description study
Objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost of surgical treatment for primary ulnar nerve entrapment (UNE) borne by the public sector in Finland.
Design
Registry-based cost description study.
Setting
Primary and secondary care throughout Finland.
Participants
We identified all the patients diagnosed with primary UNE in the whole population of Finland from 2011 to 2015 from the Care Register for Health Care. From these patients, we identified those who had undergone ulnar nerve release during the year they were diagnosed or the following year.
Interventions
Open ulnar nerve release.
Outcome measures
The primary outcome measure was cost borne by the public sector in 2015 euros. The cost of surgery was based on the diagnosis-related group prices. We calculated the cost of a single visit to a primary care physician, an electroneuromyography examination, a preoperative visit to a hand surgeon and a follow-up appointment by telephone in specialised care for each patient. These unit costs were provided by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and the same costs were used for each patient. We obtained the number of reimbursed sick days and the total amount reimbursed to each patient in euros within the 2 years after diagnosis from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.
Results
During our study period, approximately 1786 primary UNE diagnoses were made yearly, and on average, 876 (49%) of patients received surgical treatment annually. The surgery-related cost per patient averaged at EUR 1341 (43%) and reimbursed sick leaves at EUR 952 (30%) during this period. The annual cost of surgical treatment for UNE borne by the public sector in Finland varied between EUR 3082 and EUR 3213 per patient.
Conclusions
The average cost of surgical treatment for UNE in Finland was EUR 3140 per patient between 2011 and 2015.

Associations between lumbar bone mineral density, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and history of kidney stones in adults aged 30-69 years in the USA (NHANES 2011-2018)
Objectives
Most kidney stones contain calcium, which is closely associated with human bone health. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between the history of kidney stones and human bone health. This study examined the associations between lumbar bone mineral density (BMD), serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) and a history of kidney stones in individuals aged between 30 years and 69 years.
Design and data analysis
A multivariate logistic regression model was used to estimate the relationship between lumbar BMD, serum 25-OHD levels and kidney stones in this cross-sectional study. All models incorporated survey sample weights and were adjusted for covariates.
Setting
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2018. The exposure and outcomes of this study included the lumbar BMD and presence of kidney stones.
Participants
All the 7500 participants for this cross-sectional survey were selected from the NHANES between 2011 and 2018.
Main outcome measures
The main outcome of this study was the presence of kidney stones. The interviewers asked the questions on kidney stones while the respondents were at home, using a computer-assisted personal interview system.
Results
Lumbar BMD was negatively correlated with a history of kidney stones in all three multivariate linear regression models; the negative association existed in all genders after adjusting for all confounding factors. In the multiple regression analysis, there was an interaction between serum 25-OHD and lumbar BMD (p
