The importance of stories and storytelling in medicine and science should not be underestimated. While rigorous scientific evidence is central to advancing medicine and health care, the value of stories to comprehend, communicate, contextualize, and translate the evidence into practice and policy is vital. Anecdotes and narratives help clinicians personalize care, learn from individual perspectives and experiences, and embrace the fallible yet extraordinary humanity of all we do in medicine. Moreover, storytelling is key to turning abstract statistical or scientific evidence into real-world examples to help decision-making by policy makers and patients alike. Thus, we are introducing a new section, entitled Inside Story, to recognize storytelling as a—perhaps even the—fundamental mode of human learning and communication.
